STATIC NOISE
Exploring the Spatial Expressions of Muammar Gaddafi’s Dictatorship
Instructor: Srdjan Jovanovic Weiss (2015)
This seminar examined the emerging roles of architects and designers in the context of new and contested urban ideologies. The output of this research was a graphic novel exposing the spatial desires of autocratic leaders as expressed through their architectural and
urban projects.
Using the television as a guiding character, "Static Noise" reveals an architectural palimpsest of Gaddafi’s spaces. By juxtaposing images of humble, traditional environments with the glitzier projects commissioned and owned by Gaddafi, this graphic novel calls into question the wavering message and audience of
the dictator.
